Example of Narrative Text with Moral Lesson – The King of the Mice and the Woodcutter

English Admin – One of the goals of writing a narrative text is teaching readers a moral lesson. That is why narrative texts always teach us some moral value. A narrative text will be constructed in ORIENTATION, COMPLICATION and RESOLUTION. Such plot of narrative story will determine the the story as whole. Let’s see the following example of narrative text!

The Story of The King of the Mice and the Woodcutter

Once, there was a king of mice. He lived inside a banyan tree in a forest. He loved the tree as his home. He lived there happily.
One day, a poor man wanted to cut down the banyan tree. The king of the mice was frightened so he asked the woodcutter to leave the tree standing. In result, he would give the woodcutter a gold every day. The woodcutter agreed.
Every evening, the king of the mice gave a piece of gold to the woodcutter. The gold was taken out from the roots of the banyan tree. The woodcutter was happy and took the gold home.
After a few days, the woodcutter’s wife asked him, “Where does the gold come from?” So he replied, “The king of the mice gives me the golds from under the roots of the tree.” “Oh, you are stupid!” his wife said and suggested. “Why don’t you cut down the tree and take the golds all away?” The woodcutter would do as his wife said.
The following day, the woodcutter cut down the banyan tree. Unfortunately, he did not find any gold there instead the king of the mice had run away and crept up to the woodcutter’s house. The king of the mice took back all the golds.

So, do you catch what moral lesson given from the story? It is easily understood, right? Well we can broad our mind and think what valuable lesson should readers get from that story, some of them are:
1. Don’t be greedy!
2. Don’t break your promise!
3. Don’t do one’ suggestion without think carefully first! even from your own wife, girl, or friend.

Generic Structure Analysis of  the Narrative Story of Mice King and Woodcutter

Now, after reading the story of narrative text. What should you do next? As student of high schools, reading a narrative story means understanding the generic structure of the narrative story. So how do we analyze the generic structure of the narrative text above? Here we go
1. Orientation: From the story, we see the introductory orientation is seen from the sentence below:
Once, there was a king of mice. He lived inside a banyan tree in a forest.
2. Complication: Some time the complication is not stated clearly. It often implied inside the conversation among the story participants or along with the story plot. So we can guess the complication from the sentence clues below:
a. “Oh, you are stupid!” his wife said and suggested. “Why don’t you cut down the tree and take the golds all away?” The woodcutter would do as his wife said.
b. he asked the woodcutter to leave the tree standing. In result, he would give the woodcutter a gold every day.
3. Complication: How the writer ends his story. He can finishes with good ending or bad one. Can you catch the resolution from that story of mice and woodcutter? well here it is:
Unfortunately, he did not find any gold there instead the king of the mice had run away and crept up to the woodcutter’s house.
