Expressing Agree and Disagree in English Conversation

English Admin – When you are in a debate or discussion forum, you need to express your agreement or disagreement. The expression can be in variety. However you can follow some key phrase below to help you in such situation.

Expressions of agree and disagree is one speaking topic you should learn when you are learning English in many high schools. Having the good skill in such speaking topic will help you getting better understanding on many kind of exposition essays. Some of them are texts which labeled as analytical exposition and hortatory exposition.

The following expressions are commonly used to say agreement and disagreement.
Agree. It means when you feel agree on certain idea or opinion. You can say:
I agree with you.
You are right.
Oh, that’s interesting.
You have a good point.
I think you might be right about that.

Stance can expressed by agreeing or disagreeing

Disagree. It means when you are want to say that you are in the contrary side.
I see. However, …
I don’t agree with you.
My point of view differs from yours.
I think we are looking at this the same way.
I think our perspectives are different.
In my point of view…
I see your point of view, but…
I don’t see your point of view.
I think you might be wrong.
In many English conversations, we often say that we agree or disagree with each other. There are many ways to express agreement or disagreement and the one we use depends on how strong we agree or disagree.
Here’s a list of some common expressions.

Agreeing in English
I think you’re right.
I agree with you.
Strongly agreeing
I couldn’t agree with you more.
You’re absolutely right.
I agree entirely.
I totally agree.
Partly agreeing
I agree with you up to a point, but…
That’s quite true, but…
I agree with you in principle, but…
Disagreeing
I’m not sure I agree with you.
I’m afraid I don’t agree.
I’m afraid I disagree.
I’m afraid I can’t agree with you.
I’m afraid I don’t share your opinion.
Note When you disagree with someone in English, you can often sound more polite by using a phrase such as: “I’m afraid…”

Disagreeing strongly
I don’t agree at all.
I totally disagree.
I couldn’t agree with you less.

Example of Dialog and Conversation about Agreement and Disagreement

The previous post about the list in example of discussion texts is quite famous. Here is the sample of very short dialog consisting agreement and disagreement

Disagree in Dialog:
John: Hey what do u think about this movie?
Zedo: I think this movie is really good.
John: I don’t think so. This movie is so boring that I sleep while watch it. The plot is flat and there is not any suspense in the story. I like watching film but this time I disagree with you
Agree in Dialog:
Ati: Hey, Look at my new Ring , isn’t it cool??
Bis: Yeah, I absolutely agree with you, your ring is so cool. It perfectly matches with your finger. It must be a very expensive ring.
