Glossary of Terms in Learning Text Types – Part 1

What is orientation? Do you understand about complication? What text does use resolution term in its generic structure? All of the term will be explained in the series. This post is about the glossary of terms used when learning English text. Because there a lot of terms need to be explained, the post will be divided into 3 series, and this the first one.

When we are learning English through texts-based approach, we often see some terms which technically relate to genres whether for generic structure or language feature. This post is listing the glossary of terms which are often found when learning English text.

1. Participant: It refers to agent, actor of the actions in the text. In literary term, participant can be characters.
2. Circumstance: In short, it cover the answers of question about when, where, why, and how. Relating to the term of grammar and structure, circumstance the coverage of the area of adverb, namely, time, place, and manner
3. Process: It commonly refers to verb as a part of speech which is dominantly used in the text. Process or verb in genres is divided into several kinds. The process or verb relating to text types learning is commonly divided into 7 kinds
a. Material process
b. Mental process
c. Verbal process
d. Relational process
e. Existential process
f. Behavioral process
g. Meteorological process

4. Nominal group. What is a nominal group? According to en.wikipedia, it is defined as:
a group of words which expresses an entity
That means the group of word which modifies a noun. This modifier is known as nominal phrase in classical grammar.
5. Epithet. What is epithet? It is actually known as adjective which describe and modifies a noun. The way of an epithet modifying a noon can be objective, subjective, or attitudinal
6. Verb group. I think we do not think that the term verb is strange. Relating to text types study, verb group refers to the usage of verbs and auxiliaries. In traditional grammar, verb group is known as verb phrase
7. Adverbial group. What is actually adverbial group? Don’t be confused with this term. It is actually we call as adverbial phrase.
8. Conjunction group. It refers to conjunctions which have more than 1 word, such as even if, as soon as, as though, etc
9. Prepositional group. Like conjunction group, prepositional group is a preposition which has more than 1 word such as right behind, in front of, etc
